2.3 The WorldSkills Occupational Standards: Building its value for work and VET futures

The main purpose of VET is to serve its own country’s or region’s socio-economic and political purposes. Since these are distinct, VET is hugely diverse. At the same time, competitive advantage matters. To benchmark this a common standard is required. The WorldSkills Occupational Standard (WSOS) is referenced to global occupational classifications and set within a framework of specialist, technical, and transversal skills which together span competence to excellence.
As an occupational standard customised to the needs of VET, the WSOS makes occupations and their movement transparent to VET; it helps to connect supply with the demand for skills. At the same time, it incorporates the knowledge, skills and behaviours on which progression and transferability depend within volatile working futures.
Following a brief description of the WSOS’s purpose and character, WorldSkills Finland will present the Development Centre. Goal of the session is to position the WSOS and the Centre within a global context, and to explore the potential value for Members, VET, and working futures.
